What is AEO (answer engine optimization)?
AEO, answer engine optimization, is shaping your content so search engines, voice assistants and AI tools use it as the direct answer to a question. In practice: answer the question in the first sentences, keep it accurate and specific, and mark it up clearly.
What an answer engine is
An answer engine replies with an answer rather than a list of links: a featured snippet at the top of Google, a voice assistant reading a reply aloud, or an AI summary. Being that answer puts your business in front of the customer before they compare anyone else.
How to do AEO
- Find the real questions: Google's "People also ask", your customers' emails and calls, and the searches in your Search Console.
- Give each important question its own heading, with a direct answer of one to three sentences right below it.
- Follow with the details: steps, prices or ranges, conditions, examples.
- Use plain language and specific facts: names, places, numbers with dates.
- Add FAQ sections with FAQPage structured data where they genuinely help visitors.
- Keep the facts consistent across your site, your Google Business Profile and directories.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
SEO gets the page ranked; AEO gets a passage used as the answer; GEO gets your business named by generative AI assistants. They share one foundation, which is why we treat them as one program. See our full comparison.
